Explore the fundamentals and latest technologies in iron pipes, valves, fittings, thrust blocks, fire hydrants, pressure monitoring systems, and gate valves from industry professionals.
Ductile Iron Pipe
Jeff Houser, McWane Ductile
The session offers a detailed overview of Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP), covering its manufacturing processes, key manufacturers, and common applications in water utility systems. The course also reviews best practices for material handling, installation methods, and pressure testing procedures. Additionally, it emphasizes corrosion-prevention strategies and provides an overview of applicable standards governing the design, installation, and use of Ductile Iron Pipe systems.
Valve Selection
Matt Miller, McWane Plant & Industrial
The session will provide an overview of the valve options commonly used in plant applications, along with the advantages and disadvantages of each type. It will also cover recommended maintenance procedures for valves, including how different valve types operate and how to address potential valve issues.
Fittings
Senuda Rajapakse, P.E., Tyler Union Waterworks
The session offers a comprehensive overview of ductile iron fittings used in waterworks applications. Attendees will learn how to identify and apply American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards such as C110, C153, C111, and C104. The course will also cover the differences between ductile and gray iron, as well as the distinctions among mechanical, flanged, and push-on joint types. Additionally, participants will receive information about linings and coatings, along with practical guidance on ensuring specification compliance. The course will address domestic manufacturing certifications, including American Iron and Steel (AIS), Buy
Thrust Restraint
Jason Carrien, Romac Industries
The session provides a history of MJ joint restraint and compares evolving technologies. The course includes a hands-on demonstration of restraint devices and a live example of modern joint restraint performance during pipe failure.
Fire Hydrants
Brett Johnson, Clove Valve
The session provides an overview of how fire hydrants operate, including their history and evolution, as well as current manufacturing procedures. The training will cover proper installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, featuring a hands-on demonstration.
Kyle Billis, iHydrant
The session will cover the various options available to end users for pressure monitoring. It will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option and provide a general overview of why pressure monitoring is important for the long-term health and stability of the end user’s system.
Gate Valve
Brad Whitaker, Kennedy Valve
The session will include a hands-on demonstration of both older double-disc gate valves and modern resilient-seated gate valves. The course will explain how older valves operate, discuss common issues associated with them, and provide repair solutions. Participants will learn how to decide whether to repair or replace these valves. For modern valves, the course will cover the new AWWA standards, the differences between these and older valves, and their relationship. We will also explore the expansion of sizing, industry innovations, and potential future challenges in this area.
